日本ビザンツ学会は、これまで日本のビザンツ史・ビザンツ美術史研究者が行ってきた「ビザンツ研究者のつどい」を発展させる形で、2003年４月に一橋大学で第１回大会を開催し、発足した学会です。
またビザンツ研究者の国際組織である国際ビザンツ学会(Association Internationale des Etudes Byzantines)の日本支部としての機能も持っています。
Japan Association for Byzantine Studies was launched in 2003, and had its first annual conference at Hitotsubashi University, in April of the same year. This was a welcome development for Japanese Byzantinists, both historians and art historians, who used to meet annually since 1984. The association is recognised as the official Japanese branch of Association Internationale des Etudes Byzantines.
